Articulating Boom Crane Operator Training - CraneTech

Articulating Boom Crane Operator Training

Train operators to safely handle articulating (knuckle boom) material handlers, recognize unsafe conditions, and use attachments with confidence. This course supports OSHA, and ANSI/ASME compliance.

Is Articulating Boom Operator the right course for you?

  • You operate articulating (knuckle boom) material handlers in general industry or delivery applications (not construction).
  • You need documented training and evaluations for OSHA/ANSI/ASME compliance outside of CCO certification.
  • You want hands-on practice with hooks and ancillary attachments (i.e. forks, augers, grapples) as it applies to your worksite.

After this course, participants will be able to:

  • Reduce equipment failures. Perform pre-use inspections to identify unsafe conditions and equipment defects.

  • Ensure crane stability. Proper setup of stabilizers and outriggers for safe lifting operations.

  • Operate in compliance. Interpret and apply load charts, including range diagrams and operational notes.

  • Increase efficiency. Attach, handle, and move loads using proper operating techniques.

  • Handle loads with confidence. Safely use various attachments such as grapples, magnets, and forks.

  • Travel safely. Demonstrate safe travel and transit practices, including boom positioning.

Topics Covered

  • Equipment design characteristics and capacity considerations

  • Accident causes, equipment failures, and safety device inspections

  • Recognizing unsafe conditions in equipment and the work area

  • Load rating charts: interpretation, operational quadrants, attachments, and capacity reductions

  • Pre-operational inspection and operator responsibilities

  • Safety precautions: load indication devices, dynamics, critical load paths, operator qualifications

  • Attaching and handling loads: setup, operating practices, hand signals, and attachments

  • Worksite travel and transit procedures, including boom positioning and overhead clearance

Compliance

  • OSHA General Industry: Training supports safe operation of articulating boom material handlers under 29 CFR 1910.180 and related sections.

  • ANSI/ASME: Aligns with ASME B30.22 (Articulating Boom Cranes) for safe operation and attachments.

  • Employer Documentation: Provides written evidence of training and evaluations employers can use to qualify operators.

Training format

Two-day program combining classroom instruction, demonstrations, and guided hands-on practice. Includes written assessments and hands-on evaluations to confirm operator knowledge and skills.

Prerequisites

Participants must:

Be age 18 or older

Be able to comprehend English (verbal and written)

Have basic math skills

Materials included

Each participant receives a comprehensive training manual, workbook, handouts, and load charts. Successful operators are awarded a certificate of completion and a wallet card as evidence of training. Frequently Asked Questions

Is this certification or qualification training?

This is qualification training for general industry and delivery work. Participants complete written assessments and hands-on evaluations, and employers use the documentation to designate operators as qualified. For construction activities under OSHA 1926 Subpart CC, third-party, accredited certification is required.

What’s the difference between operating in general industry vs. construction?

In general industry and delivery applications (such as unloading packaged goods or using attachments with a functioning overload device), operators can be qualified through employer-based training like this knuckle boom training course. In construction work—when cranes are used to hold, support, or stabilize materials for a construction activity—OSHA requires certification under 1926 Subpart CC.

Does this course cover attachments like grapples, magnets, or forks?

Yes. Operators learn how to safely use attachments such as grapples, magnets, forks, and clamshells, including how each affects equipment capacity and operating practices.

How long is articulating boom operator qualification valid?

Crane Tech provides training and written/practical evaluations that support an employer’s qualification decision. Evaluation results are valid for two (2) years. Employers must re-evaluate operators sooner if unsafe operation is observed, workplace conditions change, or a different attachment is used. Operator qualifications are not transferable between employers, and each employer must conduct its own evaluation and identify the employee as qualified.
