Digger Derrick Operator - CraneTech

Digger Derrick Operator

Operate digger derricks safely and in compliance with OSHA and ANSI standards. This course prepares participants to inspect, set up, and operate digger derricks with confidence. Covering everything from pre-use inspections and load chart interpretation to augering, pole handling, and lifting practices.

Is Digger Derrick Operator the right course for you?

  • You need operators trained to OSHA and ANSI standards, with documented evaluations for compliance.
  • You want personnel qualified in pre- and post-use inspections, safe setup, load chart interpretation, and proper use of load indicators and safety devices.
  • You supervise or operate digger derricks for utility, telecom, or construction applications, including augering, pole handling, and lifting loads.
  • You prefer training delivered at and tailored to your own equipment and jobsite.
  • You need clear qualification documentation to verify operator competency.

After this course, participants will be able to:

  • Perform pre-use inspections and document findings.

  • Set up digger derricks using stabilizers, cribbing, and blocking.

  • Interpret and apply load charts, range diagrams, and capacity notes.

  • Operate augers, booms, and hoist lines for digging holes, setting poles, and lifting loads.

  • Recognize unsafe conditions and apply safe operating techniques to avoid incidents.

  • Secure augers, booms, and stabilizers for road travel.

  • Complete written and practical evaluations that satisfy OSHA and ANSI requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are operators of digger derricks required to be qualified or certified?

For most employers, qualification is sufficient to meet OSHA and ANSI requirements. Operators must receive formal training and documented evaluations, which this program provides. The only cases where certification is required are when a digger derrick is used for lifting activities outside its primary utility/telecom scope. When the equipment is used exclusively to auger holes for poles carrying electric or telecommunication lines, to place or remove those poles, or to handle associated materials for the poles, documented qualification is fully compliant.

What can I expect during the digger derrick operator training course?

The program blends classroom instruction with hands-on practice. Participants learn technical requirements like inspections, load charts, and safety systems in the classroom, then apply them in the field through augering, pole handling, and lifting exercises.

What’s included in the qualification?

Participants who successfully complete written and practical evaluations receive a certificate of training, a wallet card, and employer-ready documentation confirming their qualification.

How long is the qualification valid?

Crane Tech does not designate operators as qualified. We provide DDO training and evaluations that support an employer’s qualification decision. Evaluation results are typically valid for two (2) years, with earlier re-evaluation required following unsafe operation, incidents, or changes in equipment or workplace conditions.

Does the course cover inspections and load charts?

Yes. A major focus is ensuring digger derrick operators can perform thorough pre- and post-use inspections, use load limiters and capacity indicators, and correctly interpret load charts. These skills are reinforced with both classroom exercises and practical evaluations.
