After this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and correct hazards through pre-inspection of the forklift and work site prior to operation.

  • Safely handle loads while maneuvering around pedestrians, docks, and trailers through hands-on, site-specific practice.

  • Demonstrate operational competency through written and practical evaluations—meeting OSHA’s qualification requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this OSHA forklift certification or qualification?

This is forklift qualification training with a written and a practical evaluation; employers use the provided documentation to qualify operators. While many refer to this as “OSHA forklift training” or “forklift certification”, federal OSHA does not require a separate national “certification” for most forklift operators. If forklifts are used with special attachments (e.g., boom or winch), additional rules may apply.

Do I need a forklift license from OSHA?

OSHA does not issue forklift licenses. Employers are responsible for ensuring each operator has been trained and evaluated under 29 CFR 1910.178(l) and can provide proof of qualification. Some people call this a “forklift license”, but it is actually employer-issued documentation of training and evaluation.

How often do forklift operators have to be reevaluated?

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(4)(iii) requires employers to evaluate each operator at least once every three years. Forklift refresher training and reevaluations must also be repeated whenever an operator is involved in an incident or near miss, observed operating unsafely, assigned a different type of truck, or when workplace conditions change.

Will my evaluation cover my company’s specific tasks and loads?

Yes. At your facility, evaluations are tailored to your equipment, routes, and load types. At Crane Tech campuses, evaluations reflect common tasks and safety training scenarios; employers must still complete the final site-specific evaluation for each employee.

Does forklift qualification transfer to a new employer?

No. Forklift operator qualification is employer-specific. Crane Tech provides training and written/practical evaluations that support an employer’s qualification decision, with evaluation results valid for two (2) years.
