Overhead & Gantry Crane Operator - CraneTech

Overhead & Gantry Crane Operator

Confident overhead crane and hoist operators are essential for preventing accidents and keeping production moving. This program builds operator skills in inspections, signaling, and load handling, giving employers the documentation needed for qualification and refresher compliance.

Is Overhead Crane & Hoist Operator the right course for you?

  • You operate bridge, gantry, monorail, jib cranes, or hoists in manufacturing, maintenance, or industrial environments.
  • You want operators trained and evaluated in compliance with OSHA 1910.179, OSHA 1926 Subpart CC, and ASME B30.2.
  • You need a program that satisfies both initial qualification and refresher/retraining requirements, with hands-on evaluation included.

After this course, participants will be able to:

  • Reduce accidents and downtime.  Identify overhead crane and hoist components, functions, and safety devices. Perform pre-use and periodic inspections.

  • Recognize unsafe conditions, side loading risks, and critical load paths.

  • Ensure OSHA and ASME compliance.  Apply standard hand signals and communication practices.

  • Attach, handle, and move loads safely, including center of gravity and load balance.

  • Operate hoists and overhead cranes with confidence while preventing accidents.

Compliance

  • OSHA 1910.179: Meets operator training and evaluation requirements for overhead and gantry cranes in general industry.

  • OSHA 1926.1438 / Subpart CC: When overhead cranes are used in construction, additional requirements may apply. In some cases, operators must also obtain national certification (such as CCO). For certification-focused training, see our Overhead Crane Operator – CCO Prep program.

  • ASME B30.2: Aligns with ASME standards for overhead and gantry crane operation.

  • Employer Documentation: Provides written evidence of training and evaluations employers can use to qualify operators.

Training format

Two-day program combining classroom instruction, demonstrations, and guided hands-on practice. Includes written assessments and hands-on evaluations to confirm operator knowledge and skills. Refresher sessions are also available and can be customized to meet employer needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do overhead crane operators need certification or qualification?

For most overhead and gantry cranes used in general industry, OSHA 1910.179 applies. In these cases, operators must be trained, evaluated, and qualified by their employer—national certification is not required.

When overhead cranes are used in construction, OSHA 1926.1438 points to Subpart CC requirements. Depending on whether the crane is permanently installed, operators may need national certification (such as CCO) in addition to training. If your team requires certification, visit our Overhead Crane Operator – CCO Prep program.

What types of equipment are covered in this overhead crane operator course?

The course covers bridge, gantry, monorail, and jib cranes, along with integrated hoists. Training is tailored to your equipment and worksite conditions.

Does this training include hoist operation?

Yes. Since many overhead cranes are paired with hoists, the course includes inspection, safe use, and operation of hoists as part of the overall program.

How often do operators need refresher training?

Refresher training is required when unsafe operation is observed, an incident occurs, workplace conditions change, or new equipment is introduced. Employers must also evaluate operators at least every three years.

How long is operator qualification valid?

Operator qualification does not expire on a fixed date. Employers are responsible for ensuring operators remain competent and must reevaluate qualifications as required.
